The Ultimate Family Weekend in Frisco: A Texas Getaway for All Ages

Discover the perfect family weekend in Frisco, filled with sports attractions, museums, superb dining, and kid-friendly fun across this vibrant Texas city.

I travel for a living, so I’m used to destinations surprising me. But Frisco, Texas—a fast-growing, sports-loving, creativity-fueled city just 30 minutes from DFW or Love Field—caught me off guard in the best possible way. I visited on my own for a media tour, but the entire time I kept thinking, This place is tailor-made for families. I kept thinking about how much my 10-year-old grandson would enjoy the kids’ attractions and how much my oldest grandson would love the sports attractions. 

Frisco blends world-class sports attractions with hands-on museums, creative dining, and imaginative experiences you won’t find anywhere else. It’s playful without feeling gimmicky, elevated without being exclusive. Whether your family includes toddlers, teens, grandparents, or a mix of all three, Frisco makes it easy to explore, engage, and enjoy time together.

Here’s what I discovered—and why I think your family will love Frisco just as much as I did.

Where to Stay: Comfort, Convenience & Space to Breathe

I checked into the Hyatt Regency Frisco, which connects directly to Stonebriar Centre. For families, that walkability alone is gold—restaurants, activities, shops, and entertainment are right outside your door.

The Hyatt’s lobby bar, Copper & Steel, made a welcoming first stop during my group meet-and-greet.

If you’re planning more of a resort-style escape, the Omni PGA Frisco Resort is also exceptional, with pools, golf experiences, and wide-open spaces where kids can roam.

Either way, you’re close to everything.

Day 1: A Whimsical Dinner & First Glimpse of Frisco’s Sports Energy

Dinner at The Glen at The Star

My first evening set the tone for the trip. I headed to The Glen Restaurant, a visually stunning restaurant at The Star, the 91-acre Dallas Cowboys World Headquarters campus.

Think dramatic lighting, lush florals, towering tree sculptures—it’s theatrical and fun in a way kids and adults will both appreciate. The adults in the group will particularly enjoy the exclusive Scotch bar, The Monarch Stag. I’m not a Scotch drinker, so I was thrilled to discover a nice selection of sparkling wines. 

While I enjoyed a relaxing dinner with fellow travelers, I couldn’t help imagining families around me, snapping photos and soaking in the magical atmosphere. It’s the kind of restaurant where the décor alone keeps everyone talking.

Outside, families tossed footballs on the turf as music and laughter drifted through the plaza. Even without kids in tow, I felt the contagious energy immediately.

Day 2: From Golf Tech to Football Legends to Playful Museums

I had a full day of exploring ahead—perfect for testing how well Frisco works as a family destination. The verdict? Exceptionally well.

Breakfast at The Apron | Omni PGA Frisco Resort

I started the morning at The Apron, located inside the Omni PGA Frisco Resort. The food is fresh and vibrant, and the large windows overlook the golf courses. I watched as kids hopped along the paths outside while parents sipped morning coffee—a peaceful way to start a busy day.

Even if no one in your family is a golfer, the PGA Coaching Center is worth a stop. I toured the facility and tried some of the motion-tracking technology myself, laughing at how brutally honest those screens can be.

But what impressed me most was how accessible the entire PGA campus is. With a 2-acre putting course, a 10-hole short course, shops, dining, and endless space to run and play, PGA Frisco is truly a family-friendly environment—not just a golfer’s paradise.

I would love to go back during the evening, cozy up at the bar, and sip cocktails under the stunning Trick Rider display hanging over the circular bar. Definitely one of the most stunning bar displays I’ve seen.

National Soccer Hall of Fame

Next, I visited the National Soccer Hall of Fame, a vibrant, interactive museum that blends history with hands-on technology.

Families will love the reaction-time challenges, virtual goalkeeping, and immersive exhibits celebrating the sport. I wandered through the galleries, imagining how much fun kids would have racing from station to station. I’m not a huge soccer fan, and I still really enjoyed my time there. 

The Star & the Jerry Jones Interactive Experience

If you’re a football family—or even if you aren’t—The Star and its Ford Center is a must-see.

As part of the tour, I walked through the Ford Center and training areas, saw the famous Super Bowl rings, and explored memorabilia spanning the Cowboys’ storied history.

But the real showstopper is the Jerry Jones Interactive Experience, a hologram-based Q&A using advanced AI. While photos aren’t permitted, I can say this: kids (and adults) will be fascinated watching “Jerry” respond to their questions as though they were standing face-to-face with him. As with many sports on this trip, I’m not usually a huge fan, but I really enjoyed this one. It was as much about the history as about the sport. I was impressed with the facility, intrigued by the history, and welcomed by the hospitality. 

Lunch at Sidecar Social

We stopped at Sidecar Social for lunch—a perfect family pick. Arcade games, bowling, and giant screens keep kids entertained while parents enjoy an easy, casual meal. I had a moment watching families nearby and thought, This is exactly where I’d bring my grandkids.

Afternoon Adventures: Libraries, Video Games & Trains

Frisco Public Library

I know it’s not usually on your travel itinerary, but you’ll want to plan a visit to Frisco’s public library. It impressed me far more than I expected. Housed in a former rocket-parts factory, the building is enormous, airy, and full of imaginative touches. Rexy, the giant T-Rex, is the central display, but there is so much more (including books, of course.)

Families will love the children’s wing, dinosaur displays, and collaborative spaces that feel less like a library and more like an exploratory hub. I was intrigued by the dioramas built into the floor. It’s like peeking into a tiny world just below the surface.

I also loved the entryway ceiling, with the first lines of novels creating a unique entryway that guides you into the library. The creative painted aluminum sculpture, called Storied Landscapes, was created by Acrylicize in 2023 for the library. 

National Videogame Museum

Just a short walk away is the National Videogame Museum, one of my favorite stops. Picture room after room of retro consoles, neon arcades, playable exhibits, and nostalgic history. I played a few rounds of Space Invaders and lost myself in the joy of it. Kids, teens, and adults will equally adore this place. I really want to take my grandson back to enjoy this one (and maybe my son—he grew up on most of these video games!)

TrainTopia & the Museum of the American Railroad

Also inside the Discovery Center is TrainTopia—Museum of the American Railroad, an extraordinarily detailed model-train world perfect for curious young travelers. The Museum of the American Railroad offers walking tours on select days, and rail enthusiasts will be in heaven exploring the engines, exhibits, and rail history.

After several packed hours, I returned to the Hyatt for a brief rest—something I strongly encourage families to plan. Frisco has so much to do that building in downtime will help everyone stay energized and happy.

Dinner in The Rail District: Community, Charm & Cozy Cuisine

The Heritage Table

Dinner was at The Heritage Table in Frisco’s historic Rail District, a charming neighborhood full of small shops, bistros, and tree-lined sidewalks. The restaurant focuses on locally sourced ingredients (the menu shows where each item is sourced) and zero-waste principles, but what stood out to me was the comforting, homey atmosphere. It’s the kind of place where families feel welcomed instantly.

You won’t find a bad dish here. Chef Rich Vana is the chef and owner and was a 2024 James Beard Semi-Finalist for Best Chef – Texas. The charming, historic home sets the stage, but the food is the star at The Heritage Table. I started with fried green tomatoes, but your starter options might differ since the menu is seasonal. I also enjoyed the country-fried chicken and spaetzle, because I couldn’t leave Texas without country-fried chicken! For dessert, we all shared the three options: chocolate silk pie, buttermilk lemon pie, and golden milk bread pudding. They were delicious, so the family should order one of each and share!

If you’re not ready to turn in for the night, there’s usually live entertainment as you wander through the Rail Yard, so amble along and find a spot for a nightcap before heading back to the hotel for a good night’s rest.

Day 3: Creativity & Imagination at KidZania

On my final morning, I toured KidZania at Stonebriar Centre, one of Frisco’s most unique attractions. Imagine a miniature city run entirely by kids—complete with banks, hospitals, restaurants, fire stations, and radio studios. Children choose “jobs,” earn KidZos (the city’s currency), and learn real-world skills through play. After you go through “security” and board the plane for your “trip” to KidZania, you emerge into a whole new world where kids rule. 

Even walking through the space alone, I felt a sense of wonder. It’s engaging, empowering, and deeply educational. If you’re visiting Frisco with children, KidZania should be at the top of your list. I so wanted to go grab one of my grandkids and return right away. This had me saying “wow” around every corner. If you are looking for something to do in the Dallas area, this is it. I would return to Frisco simply to check out KidZania.
